Winning season ends on winning note

 Article by A B-Team Fan

An up-and-down season ended on the upswing for the boys B team, which avenged an earlier loss to the hated White Knollers, 36-26, Thursday night at the bad guys’ gym.

Playing without two starters --- Trae Carson and Joby Glymph --- who could not get out of their sick beds, Jack Edelson, Preston Doyle and Jalen Cook provided all the anesthesia necessary to put White Knoll out of its misery.

“We needed guys who could step up and score,” said Lexington coach Bill Gunter. “We didn’t have anybody the last two games who could put the ball in the basket.”

Edelson led the scoring with 12 points, including a key driving shot at the buzzer to give Lexington a 20-14 halftime lead. Doyle added 11 points with nifty work around the basket, and Cook contributed 10 with his slice-and-dice maneuvers through the defense.

The B team concluded the season with an 11-8 record. After winnings its first six games, the Wildcats struggled down the stretch when they fell three times to Dutch Fork.

Scoring summary:

            WHITE KNOLL (26) --- Kinley 2, Fallaw 5, Wilson 2, Jumper 7, C. Smith 7, Siakor 1, Bowles 2.

LEXINGTON (36) --- Jack Edelson 12, Addison Hamrick 1, Preston Doyle 11, Ben Keisler 2, Jalen Cook 10.

B team gives (cough-cough) out

Nearly an entire team of ill players made for tired legs and a sickly performance Monday night in the Lexington B team boys’ 37-24 loss to North Augusta at the old Wildcats gymnasium.

“All we can do is hope we get everyone healthy for the final game of the season,” said coach Bill Gunter, whose boys close out the regular season on Thursday at White Knoll.

The loss dropped Lexington to 10-8.

“We were not the same team tonight that started the season 6-0,” Gunter said.

Lexington bolted to an 11-4 lead, but it became quite apparent that few players had the stamina to sustain that intensity. A bug of flu-like symptoms has bitten its way through the roster over the past two weeks.

As a result, North Augusta held Lexington to a single field goal by Preston Doyle in the second quarter in capturing an 18-13 halftime lead. The lead swelled to 28-18 by the end of the third quarter and the game’s outcome was never again in doubt.

Joby Glymph again led Lexington in scoring with 8 points, followed closely by Doyle with 7.

Scoring summary:

            NORTH AUGUSTA (37) --- Hillary 3, Wideman 2, Tolbert 6, Castleberry 6, Robinson 4, Davis 15, Fritch 1.

LEXINGTON (24) --- Jack Edelson 2, Preston Doyle 7, Jalen Cook 4, Joby Glymph 8, Bushnell Brunson 1, Trae Carson 2
