Wild Cats Ride Green Wave to Round Four
After last night’s 3-1 victory over Summerville, Lexington moves on to the Lower State Championships of the volleyball playoffs. They will face last year’s lower state champions, Wando. Last night’s match was a hard fought battle with both teams playing excellent volleyball. In the first game the cats broke out to a 6-0 lead behind the serving of Senior, Lauren Owen which included two aces, but they were not able to maintain the lead as the Wave moved in and chipped away at the lead finally catching up at 11-10.  The Cats carved out another significant lead at 21-14 but the wave would not give up and came within 3 before the cats shut them down at 25-22. The next game was played tight all the way point for point. A few errors cost the Cats the tight game 23-25. In game three the Cats jumped out to an 8-3 lead and again the wave would not die they fought for every point and eventually tied the game at 12-12 and rallied to take the lead to 16-13. A kill by Kellie Schmidt got the ball back and put it in the hands of Senior, Chasen Dillard who stepped in to serve. She served three in a row enabling three kills by Schmidt. The Cats took the lead 17- 16. The wave tied it again at 17.   At 18-17 Laura Grace Swindler sunk in two aces to take the lead to 20-17. At 21-20 Kaitlyn Cobb smacked one down to make it 22-20 then an ace by Kinsley Wade made it 23-20, but the wave kept coming and tied it up at 23 all and again at 24. The cats took the next two points ending it at 26-24.  In the fourth the Cats took another strong lead at 9-3. The wave moved to within three at 13-10 when Dillard again came into serve three in a row including an ace and broke the lead to 16-10. At 16-11 Schmidt killed three in a row taking it to 19-11. At this point the Wave was dying out and was only able to put up 4 more before the Cats closed it out at 25-15. Defense was key last night against the hard hitting of the Wave. Lauren Owen topped digs with 15, Schmidt was second with 13. Sophomores, Kinsley Wade and Aubrey Dooley held up the back row with 12 and 8. Carita Petta came of the bench and dug up 4. The team had a total of 8 blocks, with two each from Swindler, Jennifer Hoppe and Cobb. Katie McCollough threw up one block and scored 3 more on kills. Kills were led by Schmidt with a season best of 35. Schmidt also led aces with 4. Hoppe added 8 kills and Owen had 7. Setting them all up was Swindler with a season high of 48. The girls will travel to Wando on Thursday, game time TBD. If you can make the trip come out and support the Cats as they try to make it to State.

The Trojans were only able to add on 3 more before the Cats shut them down at 25-13. Defensive was another key factor in the victory. Senior Lauren Owen led digs with nine and Kinsley Wade added 7. REGION CHAMPS! REGION CHAMPS!
Article by T.Schmidt
That is the cry that went up last night in the Lexington High School gym, when the Lady Cats volleyball team clinched the region title for the fourth year in a row, by taking White Knoll in four. It was the most exciting match I have viewed at LHS in front of the largest Volleyball crowd the new gym has seen. Both schools brought out the fan clubs to cheer on the two teams tied at the top of the region until last night. Lexington moves to 13-1 in region while WK falls to 12-2, their only losses coming at the hands of Lexington. Last night’s match up was an outright battle with each team fighting for every point; the match could have gone either way. The timber wolves were able to capitalize on momentum in the first game taking it to extra points and winning 28-26. The next three games were close the whole time with the lead changing constantly. Every girl on that court on both sides fought for every point and it was volleyball at its best, but the Cats were tougher and pulled out three straight games, 25-23, 26-24, 25-23 to win the match and the title. What a great gift for our seniors who will remember this match as one of their high school career highlights. The parents and the girls would like to thank all the fans that came out last night. The family and friends, the student section, the cheerleaders and members of the LMS and PHMS volleyball teams, you added to the fun and excitement. Hope to see you again at the playoffs starting next Tuesday at home.

Cats Go to 12-1 in Region
The volleyball team traveled to North Augusta Thursday night for what should have been an easy win for the Lady Cats who took out NA earlier in the season in three, 25-9, 25-20 and 25-20. The yellow jackets who were celebrating senior night came out with a sting in the first game winning a hard fought battle 25-23. The jackets continued to play tough in games 2 and 3, but the Cats came out on top 25-22 and 25-19. By the fourth game North Augusta had nothing left and Lexington took them out easy 25-12. The 11th win in a row for the Cats ensures a tie with White Knoll at the top of the region going into Tuesday night’s rematch and final game in region play. Lexington handed White Knoll their only region loss on Sept 25th, 3-0. Let’s hope for the same outcome on Tuesday night. Thursday night’s leaders were: Laura Grace swindler with a season high assists of 39. LG also had top digs with 7. Kellie Schmidt had a season best kills with 25. She also led aces with 6. Kinsley Wade was second in aces with 4; she was also second in digs with 5. Middle, Katie McCollough led blocks with 5 and added 3 points on kills. Ladycat Volleyball
JV and varsity came away with region wins last night. JV had two close games but pulled out the win in two, 25-23 and 25-21. Varsity came out strong taking an opening lead 6-0 behind the serving of Jennifer Hoppe. This gave Lexington all the momentum which led to an easy win 25-14. Game two was a little tighter. The Foxes stayed close until 10-7 when Aubrey Dooley got on a serving run of her own with 5 in a row including an ace to break the lead open 15-7. The foxes would come within three again at 19-16, but that was the best they could do as Lexington finished them off 25-19.  The third game was a different story; the cats were not the same. The Silver foxes tied up the game at 4-4 and took the lead and never gave it back. The Cats were able to tie it at 17-17 and 18-18, but they were never able to get the lead, Dutch Fork took the win 25-21. It looked like game four would be an easy win for Lexington as they jumped out to another 6-0 lead, but at 7-1 the foxes were able to string together 5 unanswered points and close the gap to 7-6. The cats then added five of their own, taking the lead to 12-6. The foxes kept fighting and notched out 6 more tying it up at 12 all. After another 5 point run the Cats took the lead 17-12. The Cats looked comfortable at 19-16, when Dutch Fork put together 6 more and took the lead 21-19, The Cats put together two and tie it 21-21. Kellie Schmidt gets a kill for the lead, then the Foxes took one back (22-22). Another kill by Kellie and an ace by Jennifer Hoppe give the cats the lead 24-22. Aubrey Dooley set Kellie Schmidt up for the kill to end the game 25-22, Cats take the match 3-1. Leading the fight last night was setter, Laura Grace Swindler with a season high assists of 37. She had 5 digs and added 5 points, one on a kill and four on aces. Leading aces was Jennifer Hoppe with 6. Leading digs was Lauren Owen, with 6. She also added 8 kills and an ace. Kellie Schmidt led kills with 24. Kaitlyn Cobb led blocks with 2. The Lady Cats go down the road to North Augusta Thursday.

LADYCATS WIN SILVER!!                               Ladycat Volleyball
Article by T.Schmidt

The Wildcat volleyball team traveled to Charleston this weekend to compete in The Wando Invitational against the top teams in the state. The girls played awesome volleyball all weekend. They won five games in a row during Friday’s pool play which put them into first place for their pool. During Saturday pool play they dropped only two games, but with the tough competition this bumped them to the Silver division. But it was the best place for the girls to be. In the semifinals they knocked out Hilton head in two, 25-9 and 25-19, which set them up for the final match with Wando, last year’s lower state champions. Wando had beaten Lexington earlier in the season at the West Ashley Invitational.  The rematch proved to be all Lexington as the Lady Cats took out the Warriors in two, 25-22, 25-19. There could possibly be another rematch in lower state if the Wildcats continue this kind of play the rest of the season. Hopefully the tough tournament play has the girls ready to win through the rest of region play. The Lady Cats are at home tomorrow against Dutch

Wildcats Take The Sting Out of Yellow Jackets
The volleyball team traveled to Irmo last night and continued their winning ways through region play making it 10 in a row. Lexington brought most of the fans and the noise and rocked the “Temple of Doom”.  The first game was a little shaky with the Wild Cats looking a little nervous. The game stayed tight the whole way with the teams always within 3 points of each other, but with Lexington always maintaining the lead. They were able to hold the jackets off and take the win 25-23. Game 2 was all Wildcats as they were able to settle down and play their kind of volleyball. They jumped out to a huge early lead taking the first 11 points with the Jackets scoreless. Irmo was only able to get one back before the Cats took the lead to 17-1. After a couple of careless errors and several questionable calls by the ref, Irmo was able to put up 7 in a row. The Cats maintained their composure allowing only 5 more points. At 24-13 Kellie Schmidt ended it with a nasty kill set up by Laura Grace Swindler. Game 3 looked to be a little better at the start, with Irmo trying to keep it close, but at 9-6(lex) senior, Lauren Owen came up to serve 6 unanswered points including an ace to bust the lead open to 15-6. Irmo wasn’t able to put together two in a row and the lead kept growing. At 23-11 the deed was done and fresh players came in. Irmo got 1 but that was it. Junior Kirsten Barnes came up to serve and sealed the deal with an ace, ending the match 25-12. Defense was the key last night. Libero, Carita Petta did an awesome job defending the back row including 7 digs. Freshman Kaitlyn Cobb was second in digs with 4 including 3 in a row in the 3rd game. Lady Cats Knock Hornets Out of Top Spot

Lexington volleyball traveled to Aiken last night to try to avenge their only region loss of the season. It was not very pretty but they did it, forcing Aiken to a 6-2 record. Lexington remains tied at the top with WK 7-1 after their win over RNE. The lady hornets did not make it easy for the Wildcats as this was the first time this season the cats had to go to five games. The Cats never regained their composure or the lead, the Hornets took the game 25-17. In the second game the Cats returned the favor taking the momentum and never giving up the lead in a 25-14 win. Cats Swat Yellow Jackets.
Last night it was once again time for the big rivalry match as Irmo came to Lexington’s new gym for the first time. As usual it was an exciting and loud match up.  The JV made it interesting taking the first game 25-17, but dropping the second game 22-25 forcing a third game. The young cats took it to the jackets winning 15-11.  The first varsity game was a close match. Neither team ever took a huge lead. The Cats kept there composure and played solid ball.  The jackets defense kept it close but it was not enough to shut down the Cat’s hitting game. At 7-12 the cats strung together 5 to tie it up 12-12. Each team scored one more to tie it again, then Irmo put together a 4 point rally taking the lead 17-13. The points went back and forth until Irmo took a 23-21 lead. The cats kept fighting and took 4 unanswered points for the win 25- 23. The 3rd game started out even and stayed close with the teams matching up point for point until the Cats took the momentum and broke ahead at 14-11. Wildcats Take 3
rd
The volleyball team traveled to Charleston on Friday to compete in the Wildcat Invitational Tournament with some of the top teams in South Carolina. The Cats had a quick first match on Friday beating hosts West Ashley in two, 25-13, 25-21. On Saturday the girls worked easily through pool play finishing undefeated, beating Goose Creek 25-13, 25-15 and First Baptist 25-7, 25-12.  The Cats also played a cross pool match to fill an empty spot taking on power house and 4A state runner up Wando. The Wildcats played the best volleyball of their young season. It was great fun to watch such good volleyball on both sides. They fought hard and played like the region champs team, but Wando took the match 25-16 and 25-23. Their strong play against Wando gave the girls the confidence they needed to move into the playoff rounds. In the quarter finals the Cats played long time nemesis Porter Gaud. The Cats played excellent team volleyball winning in two 25-13, 25-20.  Then it was onto the semifinals to take on Bishop England who the Cats have only beaten once and never at this tournament. The Cats played hard and kept it close but fell to the Bishops 23-25, 21-25.  In the finals the Wildcats played for 3rd taking on James Island, also undefeated in pool play. Even though it was the sixth match of the day the team never lost steam and beat James Island handily in two 25-23 and 25-16 . This weekend was great practice for the girls and it should give them the confidence they need to take on the rest of region play this season. T Schmidt

Ouch That Stings                LADYCAT VOLLEYBALL
The Lady Hornets from Aiken buzzed into Lexington last night looking to avenge two serious beatings by the Wildcats last season. But from the start you could tell this Aiken team was a stronger, more experienced team than last year, as they kept it close losing to the Wildcats 21-25 in the first game. The Hornets picked up the momentum halfway through the second game and never looked back, winning the next three, 25-23, 25-23 and 25-21. The wildcats seemed to struggle with a new line-up that had not been tested with any preseason scrimmages. The Wildcats travel next week to the untested waters of Richland Northeast and Orangeburg, two new additions to the region. Hopefully they can pull it together and find their groove as a team. Leading the effort last night was the always consistent setter, junior, Laura Grace Swindler. LG had 36 assists, 15 digs and 3 kills.  Leading kills was junior, Kellie Schmidt with 16. Senior, Lauren Owen added 10 kills and 11 digs. Leading blockers were junior Jennifer Hoppe and freshman addition, Kaitlyn Cobb, they worked together to throw up 3 blocks. Sophomore, Katie McCullough added a solo and an assisted block. Leading serving aces was junior, Metta Price.  T. Schmidt
